The Indian team's excellent performance at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has received a lot of recognition from the international sporting community and T20I Captain Shreyas Iyer was amongst the first to mention that it is so many more medals for the Indian boxing team as well. The Indian boxing team was the best ever in the history of the multi-sport event as 7 gold and 3 silver medals were won.
Iyer spoke out on social media about the amazing performance of the national team. He wrote that the Commonwealth Games were a true success for India and the boxers controlled the ring in Glasgow and secured an overwhelming number of gold medals. He awarded his hats off to all the champions and para trailblazers for their excellent performance and called it Indian sport at its finest and proud to have them all represented our country.
The women’s team was the backbone of India’s boxing success, winning five gold medals in Glasgow. The men’s team also won two more titles by Sachin Siwach and Ankush Panghal, making this the best boxing campaign the country has ever had. The gold-winning champions were a big collection of talent: world champion Jaismine Lamboria in the 57kg category, Asian Games medallist Preeti Pawar in the 54kg division, Asian champion Priya Ghanghas in the 60kg weight class, Sakshi Chaudhary in the 51kg category, and Arundhati Choudhary in the 70kg category. The silver medalist was Lovlina Borgohain in the 75kg category, the Olympic medallist.
This performance was better than India's previous best boxing output at the Commonwealth Games at the 2018 Gold Coast and reached seven medals, including three golds. Across all sports, India achieved 39 medals in the Glasgow Games: 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, proving its growing status as a multi-sport powerhouse.
Shreyas Iyer, more than being thankful for the country’s athletes, is also keeping his own busy schedule as a T20 captain. The first series of his leadership has been daunting and he had a difficult start to it. India lost to Ireland 0-2 in the first series and then was dealt with a 4-0 defeat at England in the fifth match. But the team showed some resilience and character to regain confidence and win a series against Zimbabwe in three matches in Harare.
