Virat Kohli’s T20I Debut Turns 16: From Zimbabwe to World Cup Glory

Virat Kohli made his T20 International debut for India on 12 June 2010 against Zimbabwe in Harare. Kohli had 26 runs in 21 balls with his bat and shot his team to a comfortable win. The innings may have been small in numbers but it was the beginning of a career in T20 that has developed consistency and big match temperament over time.

Kohli became one of the most prolific batsmen in the shortest format for 16 years. In 125 T20I games he has scored 4,188 runs at a strike rate of 137 and is one of the most reliable run-getters. His performance in the ICC tournaments is excellent with 1,292 runs in T20 World Cups, including 15 half‑centuries. He has twice been named Player of the Tournament and that shows his ability to perform under pressure.

Kohli’s career is littered with iconic moments. 82 not out against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup at Melbourne is one of the most celebrated innings in cricket history and it shows that he can chase under pressure. And his 76 in the 2024 T20 World Cup final established that he is India’s ultimate batsman when it comes down to the wire.

From those numbers Kohli’s T20I career has been about development as a cricketer, and from an aspiring young cricketer in 2010 to a match winner today he has molded himself to suit the modern T20 game. His hard work and determination with his body and mind are a model for all of us to follow.

To end on a note of optimism and with Virat Kohli’s 16th anniversary coming up in T20. He is a great example of perseverance, skill and consistency, and he has shown that he can make his way from his first match against Zimbabwe to becoming one of the biggest names in T20Is and one of the best players in the world of T20Is.
