India’s Bihar Museum in Patna landed the ninth place in the top 100 best museums in the world in 2026, ahead of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Louvre in Paris. By having the name of Bihar Museum it has brought new attention to Bihar’s heritage and given Bihar a new identity as a place of history and culture.
The ranking was published by Worth a Journey, a Germany-based travel guide that evaluates museums around the world. Bihar Museum is the only Indian institution on the 2026 list and the highest-ranked museum from Asia, according to the published ranking.
The Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, came in 10th place and the Louvre in Paris was 31st. That puts an Indian museum among the world's top cultural institutions, in this ranking.
Bihar Museum earns 9th place in the global ranking.
Bihar Museum’s ninth place finish puts it alongside museums known for their vast collections of art, archaeology and historical artefacts.
Mexico City's Museo Nacional de Antropología led the list of 2026, followed by the Museo del Prado in Madrid and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark. The State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum completed the top five.
Other institutions in the top 10 include the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum in Türkiye, the Museum of the Second World War in Poland and the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.
The ranking covers museums with a range of subjects so all museums are good for example, art, history, archaeology, science and technology. It is also a more general comparison of institutions with different collections and visitor experiences than a ranking of art museums.
Worth a Journey says its assessment combines data analysis with in-person visits to museums. The organisation says its approach consists of an algorithm to analyze information from venues around the world in order to review and refine the results.
The ranking is based on the organisation's own methodology and should not be regarded as a universal consensus on which museums are best in the world.
What is Bihar Museum?
Bihar Museum opened in 2015 and aims to provide more space to the state’s historical and archaeological collections. It is spread over more than 13 acres in Patna and reflects Bihar’s history in art: artefacts, sculptures, coins, manuscripts and traditional, folk and modern art.
Its galleries trace the region’s history from ancient civilisations to more recent historical periods to help the visitors to understand the cultural and political development in Bihar.
One of the museum’s best-known exhibits is the Didarganj Yakshi, a celebrated ancient Indian sculpture discovered near Patna in 1917. The sculpture is well-known for its artistic craftsmanship and is a very popular attraction for visitors interested in early Indian art.
Other archaeological and cultural items from different periods of the region are displayed at the museum, as well as collections that are a reflection on Bihar’s artistic traditions.
Modern Architecture and Interactive Galleries
Bihar Museum’s appeal goes beyond its historical collection. The building was constructed by Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki and Associates, who worked with Mumbai-based Opolis Architects.
Its contemporary architectural design, open spaces and landscaped surroundings contrast with the age of many things in the room.
The museum has a special Children’s Gallery to introduce younger people to science, culture, animals and folk art; and to some of the exhibits.
Another feature is the Diaspora Gallery which shows Bihar's connections beyond its geographical borders. Regional art traditions (Madhubani, Manjusha and Sujani) also help to showcase the state’s rich creative history.
These features enable the museum to act not only as a place to preserve historical objects and to house them but also a place to teach and travel to which families and students and tourists come.
Bihar Museum Puts Patna on the Cultural Tourism Map
The international ranking might also push more people to discover Patna and Bihar’s attractions. The state is associated with important sites linked to ancient Indian history, but the museum provides a space that covers archaeological discoveries, regional art and cultural traditions in one place.
For domestic visitors, the recognition is just another reason to consider Bihar as part of a cultural travel itinerary. International travelers interested in Indian history could also use the museum as a starting point to learn about the history of the region.
The ranking could also encourage more attention to museums outside India’s most prominent tourism centres. In smaller or less frequently visited locations, institutions can help preserve regional histories and bring them to wider audiences.
How can we plan a visit to Bihar Museum?
Bihar Museum is located at Bailey Road in Patna. Its main galleries are generally open from 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday, with the museum closed on Mondays.
Visitors should refer to the museum’s official website before traveling to see what the museum is currently doing, what prices are, what gallery is open for them and what events are happening.
The museum should be included in the Patna itinerary along with other historical and cultural features of the city.
Bihar Museum’s ninth-place ranking in the 2026 global list is a landmark achievement in Bihar’s cultural landscape. International rankings are based on the methodologies and criteria used to select them but the recognition has brought more attention to the museum’s collection and architecture and educational facilities, and is another reason for travellers to explore the history and heritage of eastern India.
