OpenAI Cuts GPT-5.6 Model Prices by Up to 80% and Introduces Fast Mode Amid Growing Competition

In response to increasing international market forces, Sam Altman-led OpenAI is making big price cuts for its flagship AI models GPT-5.6. The price cut comes at a time when Chinese AI models are gaining critical attention in the industry and are able to deliver high performance at much lower costs. OpenAI’s radical price reduction will help it maintain its dominant market share among developers and enterprise customers with its advanced tools which are essentially cheaper to buy.

Cost reductions across Luna and Terra models. As the company announces in the official announcement, the price cut for API users will be immediately effective and will have a direct impact on how the use is calculated out of paid subscriptions in Codex and ChatGPT Work. The sharpest reduction is seen in GPT-5.6 Luna, which as one of the fastest and most cost-effective models of the company has seen an 80 percent reduction in price. Input token costs for Luna have gone from one dollar to twenty cents per million tokens while output token costs have dropped from six dollars to $1.20 per million tokens.

While GPT-5.6 Terra, the well-designed balanced model that is suited for everyday workflows and enterprise tasks, was cut by 20 percent; its input tokens cost $2.50 to $2 per million tokens and output tokens were reduced from $15 to $12 per million tokens. Similarly, the price for OpenAI's top-tier model GPT-5.6 Sol remains unchanged. The company said that these cost optimizations were enabled by significant architectural and hardware improvements in the GPT-5.6 generation.

As a follow-up to the price drop in Sol, OpenAI has also launched a new Fast mode for the top-end GPT-5.6 Sol model within its API ecosystem. The company claims this mode will provide up to 2.5 times faster response time than standard mode while still providing deep intelligence and reasoning capabilities. Fast mode replaces the old Priority Processing option in all the priority requests that developers have already made.

Industry observers see OpenAI’s aggressive pricing tactics as a direct response to the fast-growing competition of Chinese AI models. In recent months, several Chinese models have become popular globally for offering more advanced capabilities than top US AI contenders at less than half of their cost. This seismic shift has put enormous pressure on American AI powerhouses such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and others to deliver more value-to-performance value, so developers and businesses around the world will continue to use Western infrastructure as the building block for next-generation technological innovation.
