Yamaha has made pre-bookings for its new R2 sportbike available in India before it is officially launched on 27 August 2026. In the meantime, motorcycle fans can reserve the much anticipated Yamaha R2 before the public will get a chance to buy it.
Pre-booking for the new bike has started on Yamaha's online booking platform with a ₹10,000 amount and will be in line with the final price of purchase. The customers who book the motorcycle before the launch date will receive priority delivery at least within the pre-production time period and will also receive priority delivery when vehicle availability is available.
The launch of bookings comes just weeks after Yamaha’s August 27 launch event became a main talking point in the Indian two-wheeler market. Yamaha had already sent media invitations for an event on August 27, and there was widespread expectation that the new R2 would make its India debut on that date.
The motorcycle will be placed above the popular R15 in Yamaha’s sportbike line-up and may give customers a new performance-oriented option in the 200cc segment.
It should bring the Yamaha R2 to fill in some of the gap between the company's R15 and the larger R3. The R15 is well-known to be one of Yamaha's best-known fully faired motorcycles in India, with sporty design and a relatively compact engine combined with everyday usability.
The R2 is expected to offer a step up in performance along with the aggressive design language associated with Yamaha’s R-series motorcycles.
Yamaha has not yet revealed the technical specifications of the R2, and the final engine displacement, peak power, peak torque output, kerb weight and the exact equipment list are still to be confirmed. Some media reports have suggested that it could use a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 200cc or even higher. However, these figures should be regarded as expectations until Yamaha officially announces the specifications.
The engine will be one of the most closely watched aspects of the upcoming motorcycle. The R15 currently uses a 155cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine and it is also rumored that the R2 will receive a larger engine for better performance.
Yamaha would be able to position the motorcycle as a natural upgrade for riders looking to get more power than the R15 without going over to a bigger and potentially more expensive motorcycle category.
In the 200cc category, the R2 is expected to compete with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and other performance-oriented models. Local manufacturing may also help Yamaha to keep the motorcycle competitively priced. The final price has not been officially announced but some industry estimates have put the ex-showroom price at ₹2 lakh-plus. One report has suggested the price is around ₹2.15 lakh, but the exact price will only become clear when Yamaha officially unveils the motorcycle.
The ₹10,000 pre-booking amount is currently one of the confirmed details attracting potential buyers. The amount will be adjusted against the final on-road price when the customer makes the purchase. Yamaha has also specified that customers who change their decision can seek a refund from September 5, 2026, and the cancellation and refund process is handled through the dealership associated with the booking.
The early-booking programme is also expected to give customers priority in the delivery queue, although actual delivery timing will depend on production and stock availability. Therefore, there may be a benefit to booking the motorcycle early for customers who want to be among the first owners, but that doesn’t mean a specific date.
From a design perspective, the Yamaha R2 will follow the company’s sharp R-series styling approach. We expect the bike to be a fully faired bike with a sporty body and an aggressive riding position. It has been speculated that it will also have some engineering traits of the R15 platform and it will have upgraded parts and a bigger engine.
The chassis and suspension are also expected to focus on sporty handling. Reports have mentioned a Deltabox-style frame, USD front forks and a linked Monocross rear suspension system. Yamaha will need to ensure the final specification and equipment package is confirmed at the launch.
The technology package could also be a key differentiator. Some reports have mentioned the possibility of a TFT instrument display, Bluetooth connectivity, riding modes, cruise control, ABS and a bi-directional quickshifter. These features are not 100% certain yet, so prospective buyers should wait for Yamaha’s official announcement before considering them final specifications.
