India-US Trade Deal Nears Completion: Sergio Gor Says Negotiations in Final 1-2%

The long-awaited India-US trade agreement appears to be on the verge of successful completion, and the US ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, on Saturday said negotiations have reached a critical stage. At the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit, he said that the bilateral trade deal is in the final “1-2% of negotiations,” which means both governments are now closer than ever to a full agreement.

It has also given businesspeople, investors, and politicians in both countries hope for this deal and its impact on strengthening one of the world's fastest-growing strategic and economic partnerships.

The officials of both sides have made immense progress in the last few months in overcoming most of the challenges that had delayed the deal, Ambassador Gor said. There are technical and policy matters still to be resolved, but he expressed confidence that these would be well resolved based on the diplomatic talks.

The proposed trade agreement will improve market access and reduce trade barriers, and drive investment from India to the USA in a more efficient manner. It will also expand cooperation in manufacturing, technology, clean energy, pharmaceuticals, digital services, agriculture, and supply chain resilience.

India and the United States have steadily diversified their economic relations in the past decade. Trade is at record levels between India and the United States, one of India’s largest partners. Both governments have repeatedly said that they will strengthen relations in the commercial arena to promote economic development and job growth.

Industry leaders at the USISPF Leadership Summit welcomed the ambassador’s comments, saying the completion of the agreement could open up opportunities for businesses on both sides. For electronics, semiconductors, renewable energy, aerospace, healthcare, artificial intelligence, for example, and others, there should be better market access and a more predictable trading environment.

The trade negotiations have been particularly focused on tariffs, customs procedures, digital trade, intellectual property protection, agricultural exports, and regulatory cooperation. Some of these issues have been hard to talk about, but officials have said that both countries have a common goal of strengthening the economic relationship.

The timing of this agreement is really important as global supply chains continue to diversify—and the world economy is diversifying so rapidly. India is becoming more and more attractive to international manufacturing and investment, and so the United States is seeking reliable partners to reduce reliance on single-country supply networks, the nation’s experts said.

The trade deal will also complement the strategic cooperation between New Delhi and Washington. Over the past few years, these two democracies have expanded cooperation in defense, critical technologies, cybersecurity, clean energy, education, and regional security initiatives.

A finalized trade agreement would send a strong signal to global investors on the stability and long-term economic potential of India-US economic relations, to be able to sell to the world, for long-term stability and long-term development prospects of India-US trade relations, with no less a signal to international investors. It can also encourage investment in infrastructure, innovation, research, and advanced manufacturing.

Even in spite of such promising progress, officials from both countries have emphasized that negotiations are being conducted carefully to ensure the final agreement has balanced benefits. Trade experts argue that even the final “1-2%” of negotiations might involve the technical details of the deal that will still need mutual agreement before it is reached.

A USISPF Leadership Summit has long been a forum for government officials, industry leaders, and policy experts to discuss how bilateral cooperation can be improved. Ambassador Gor's update only made it more likely that the announcement will be made soon if all the other difficulties are resolved.

As India and the US continue to deepen their strategic partnership, the trade agreement is expected to be one of the most significant economic milestones in recent years. Businesses across both countries will now closely watch the final round of negotiations, hoping for the successful conclusion of a deal that promises to boost trade, investment, innovation, and long-term economic cooperation.
