Nuwakot, Nepal: Trishuli Bazar is starting to recover after the flash floods left much of the town covered by mud, debris and damaged property.
Cleanup and reconstruction of the affected areas is slowly taking place as residents and shop owners are returning to their homes and businesses.
The floodwater has caused significant destruction across parts of Nuwakot, damaging neighborhoods, homes, shops, roads and other local infrastructure.
In Trishuli Bazar, the aftermath has been particularly evident as there are still piles of mud and debris from the roads and commercial buildings to be cleared from streets and commercial areas.
The good news is that recovery is slowly emerging. Residents whose homes have suffered relatively little damage are returning to their homes.
Some families are cleaning their houses, clearing mud and assessing what can be salvaged from flood-hit areas.
Several shopkeepers have also resumed business after clearing debris from their establishments. For many local traders, reopening their shops is an important first step to restoring normalcy and earning a livelihood again.
However, the recovery is far from complete. Clearing operations are still in progress in some parts of Trishuli Bazar and much of the debris removal process is expected to take time.
The extent of the damage has also posed problems for people recovering their homes and businesses while finding roads and services disrupted.

The return of commercial activity still gives residents a sense of hope. Shops are reopening, people are cleaning their homes and movement in the market indicates that Trishuli Bazar is beginning to recover from the disaster.
Flash floods can cause heavy damage in a very short period, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions like Nepal.
Heavy rainfall can rapidly raise the water level in rivers and streams and carry mud, rocks and other debris into nearby settlements.
In such disasters, recovery often takes long after floodwater levels recede. Residents struggle with damaged property, destroyed livelihoods and the daunting task of clearing up after the disaster before rebuilding can be done.
Trishuli Bazar’s immediate focus is cleaning the affected areas and making homes and businesses usable again. The reopening of shops suggests that there are still sectors of the local economy where some part of it is functioning, while residents are still assessing the full magnitude of the floods.
The gradual return of people to their homes and businesses is indicative of the resilience of the Nuwakot community.
The scars from the flash floods are still visible, but the reopening of Trishuli Bazar is a first sign of life returning to the devastated area.
The road to full recovery is likely to be challenging, but the ongoing cleanup and return of residents mark an important beginning for Trishuli Bazar as the community works to rebuild after the disaster.
