Trump has removed Pam Bondi as U.S. Attorney General, reversing a long-standing trend of the federal government and the state government.

The Epstein Files and Investigative Friction

Bondi’s exit is largely due to years of sustained scrutiny over the Department of Justice’s treatment of the files on the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Bondi was initially viewed as a staunch ally of Trump and Republican lawmakers. In the process, her critics accused her of mismanaging or hiding the facts and evidence from sex trafficking investigations and to a degree, that only served to amplify public interest in the President’s past connections with Epstein.

Beyond the Epstein controversy, sources say President Trump was frustrated by what he perceived as a lack of urgency. Bondi did not move fast enough to pursue criminal cases against his vocal critics and political adversaries, he said.

A Tenure of Loyalty and Criticism

A former Republican State Attorney General of Florida, Bondi’s tenure was characterized by a combative defense of the President’s agenda. She spoke frequently of “restoring focus” on the DOJ violent crime in particular and trying to restore trust with the President's base after federal charges brought against Trump before his return to office.

But her tactics drew sharp rebukes from legal experts and career officials. Bondi had removed dozens of career prosecutors who had been working on investigations that the White House did not like. Critics said those actions undermined the Justice Department’s traditional independence and replaced even-handed justice with political maneuverability.

The Second Cabinet Exit in a Month

Bondi’s departure also marks the second high-profile departure of the Trump cabinet in less than 30 days. On March 5, President Trump removed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after disagreements over the administration’s immigration agenda.

Todd Blanche to Lead Interim Transition

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche will take on the role of Acting Attorney General on an interim basis. This is a precursor to a bigger reshuffle of the cabinet, potentially a more aggressive approach to weaponizing the U.S. legal system in alignment with the President’s targets.
