The United States military has conducted targeted strikes on Iranian radar and drone command-and-control facilities, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the latest escalation in the tension between Washington and Tehran.
CENTCOM said the strikes were conducted over the weekend against military bases in Goruk and Qeshm Island in southern Iran. It was described as a defensive response after the reported shootdown of a U.S. MQ-1 surveillance drone that American officials said was operating in international waters.
The targeted facilities were radar systems, drone command infrastructure, air defence facilities and ground control stations believed to be linked to Iranian military operations, the U.S. military said. CENTCOM stated that the action was to respond to what it called “aggressive Iranian actions” and protect American personnel and regional maritime security interests.
The latest strikes come at a time of increasing instability in the Gulf region, most notably in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the world’s key energy shipping routes. Iranian officials have denied that Iran is threatening commercial and military vessels in the area; Iran has also denied it.
CENTCOM emphasised that the United States does not seek to go to war but is prepared to respond to threats to its forces. The command has already been involved in strikes on Iranian missile launch sites, drone sites, and naval assets, it said, all because it is defending and protecting navigation in the oceans.
The development follows a series of military exchanges between the two countries in recent weeks in spite of diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider regional war. There have been ceasefire violations and security incidents in and around the Gulf region, which have raised concerns among international observers about the likelihood of a further escalation.
Iran has not commented on the recent strikes. But the incident will certainly add strain to already tense relations between the two nations as regional security fears continue to mount.
