ByteDance co-founder Zhang Yiming has become Asia's richest person and now surpasses Chinese industrialist Gautam Adani, which marks a great change in the billionaire class of the Asian billionaire list.
By the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Zhang’s fortune has crossed $105 billion as his own and is significantly ahead of the Indian industrialist Gautam Adani’s $105 billion, putting him above Adani and a huge leap in value from the world to the tech and artificial intelligence business.
Zhang Yiming is best known as the founder of ByteDance, the Chinese technology company behind TikTok, one of the world’s most popular short-video platforms. His rise to the top of Asia’s wealth rankings is on account of an increase in the estimated value of his stake in ByteDance. Recent investor valuations and growing expectations surrounding the company’s artificial intelligence business have played a role in his wealth.
Zhang's fortune has increased substantially over the years. Bloomberg data show that his wealth has grown by more than eightfold from about $13 billion in March 2019. It’s a growth we can see in ByteDance and how rapidly it is expanding business opportunities on global digital platforms and AI products as well as on the world market at large.
ByteDance has also developed well beyond TikTok. TikTok is the company’s most recognizable international product, but there’s a lot of money invested in artificial intelligence. The Doubao AI Assistant is a big hit here in China and Seedance, AI-supported video-generation technology, has also made waves. These businesses have increased investor interest in ByteDance and also led to the changing estimates of Zhang Yiming’s personal fortune.
Zhang’s journey is also significant because he no longer runs ByteDance on a day-to-day basis. He stepped down as chief executive in 2021 and later moved away from the company’s operational leadership. But he still remains one of the key figures associated with ByteDance and still has a big economic interest in the company.
The shift at the top also puts Gautam Adani’s wealth in a new context. Adani, founder and chairman of the Adani Group, has made his fortune in infrastructure, energy, logistics, ports and airports. His industrial empire has made him one of India’s most powerful industrialists and one of Asia’s richest citizens.
Billionaire rankings can change rapidly because fortunes are linked to stock prices, private company valuations, exchange rates and other market factors. For private companies like ByteDance, changes in investor valuations can have a particularly significant impact on estimates of a founder’s net worth. Hence, the position of Asia’s richest person can change again as market and company valuations move.
Zhang’s rise also demonstrates the growing reach of technology and AI in creating enormous private wealth. Billionaire fortunes in Asia were traditionally linked to infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, real estate and financial services. The fast growth of technology platforms has only added to wealth generation.
AI is a big factor for ByteDance in its long-term strategy. AI tools, assistants and content-generation technologies have expanded ByteDance’s reach beyond social media and short-form video. The ongoing worldwide adoption of AI has also attracted more and more investors to companies able to bring in AI solutions that combine large user bases, powerful algorithms and digital capabilities.
So the rise of Zhang Yiming is broader than a billionaire ranking change. And it is an indication of the changed technology and business landscape of Asia in which digital platforms and artificial intelligence are becoming central to corporate value-building in an increasingly digital world.

At the same time, the ranking should be viewed as a snapshot, rather than a permanent position. Billionaire indexes update their estimates constantly, so Zhang Yiming, Gautam Adani and other major Asian business figures can move up or down the list as valuations change.
But, at least for now, Bloomberg’s latest ranking places Zhang Yiming at the top of Asia’s wealth hierarchy, with his estimated fortune above $105 billion. His rise from building ByteDance into a global technology company to becoming Asia’s richest man highlights the enormous financial value that successful digital platforms and emerging AI businesses can have on the global economy.
