Bengaluru traffic police have drawn up a new set of restrictions on vehicle movement across some of the city’s major flyovers to alleviate congestion and improve traffic flow. On several important flyovers, two-wheelers, autorickshaws and goods vehicles are being restricted.
The traffic police have prepared a five-point plan to curb congestion, and they are going to implement the restrictions in phases. Some of the new rules will go into effect on September 4, and some restrictions on the Electronic City Flyover will start on September 11.

Electronic City Flyover
The biggest change is the Electronic City Flyover, where in the future two-wheelers will be banned.
Autorickshaws and three-wheeler goods vehicles will also not be permitted on the flyover.
We will also restrict goods vehicles of various types during certain hours. Goods vehicle movement will be restricted between 6 am and 10 pm.
The restrictions are to decrease congestion on the important corridor and enhance the movement of other vehicles.
The new rules for the Electronic City Flyover will take effect from September 11.
Airport Flyover
The Airport Flyover will also see major restrictions.
Two-wheelers will be completely prohibited from using the flyover. Autorickshaws will also be completely banned on the stretch.
Heavy goods vehicles are also under consideration by traffic authorities for restrictions.
Goods autos will not be allowed during the 6 am to 10 pm period, according to the proposed traffic measures.
The restrictions are anticipated to help to control traffic on one of Bengaluru’s most important routes connecting the city to the airport corridor.
Double Decker Flyover
The Double Decker Flyover will see a specific restriction for heavy commercial traffic.
Heavy goods vehicles will be completely prohibited from using the flyover.
The objective is to reduce the movement of heavy vehicles on the elevated corridor and improve traffic conditions.
Market Flyover
Restrictions have also been proposed for the Market Flyover and BGS Flyover.
Heavy goods vehicles will be banned on that stretch for 24 hours.
Goods vehicles will also face time-based restrictions.
Their movement will be restricted from 7 am to 11 am and again from 4 pm to 10 pm.
These windows of time are when traffic volumes are expected to be higher, and traffic authorities can reduce the number of commercial vehicles on the flyover during peak hours.
Peenya Flyover
The Peenya Flyover will also have restrictions for commercial and three-wheeler traffic.
Autorickshaws will not be allowed on the flyover, and goods autos will also face restrictions.
Heavy and medium goods vehicles will be restricted during peak times, from 7 am to 11 am and from 4 pm to 10 pm.
The restrictions are to keep heavy and commercial vehicles away from the flyover during peak times to facilitate traffic flow.
Traffic Police's Five-Point Plan
The restrictions are part of a bigger traffic management strategy that Bengaluru traffic police are implementing to combat congestion at major junctions and elevated road corridors.
With the city’s traffic volume increasing and with the city’s sprawling population, flyovers have become more strategic routes for commuters moving through the city in all areas of Bengaluru. But the movement of two-wheelers, autorickshaws and heavy goods vehicles on some elevated roads can create congestion and traffic-management issues in some cases.
The authorities are therefore introducing vehicle-specific restrictions based on the characteristics and traffic load of individual flyovers.
Although the restrictions would help to improve traffic flow, the commuters who use two-wheelers and commercial vehicles will have to plan alternate routes.
