Cause: Deep Depression in the Bay of Bengal

Meteorologists attribute the sudden shift to a deep depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The system moves at about 13 kmph and has had an impact on atmospheric phenomena throughout southern India. On January 9, the most affected coastal condition was Sri Lanka and the moist peripheral rain is causing enhanced cloud cover and rainfall across South Interior Karnataka.

Temperature Report: A Cold Weekend

The mercury had fallen steeply in all the major observatories in the city:

  • Kempegowda International Airport (KIA): Minimum 13.2°C, about 1.2°C lower than average.
  • HAL Airport: with minimum of 14.4°C reported.
  • In the City Observatory (Central): we see some reports of temperatures of about 14.9° to 15°C and it is actually struggling to get above 25° at all times of day as a result of constant cloud cover, however making the afternoon climate much cooler than it usually expects for mid-January.

Forecasted Rainfall: Today and Tomorrow

Light to moderate rain falls are predicted in one to two spots within Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Chikkaballapur, Ramanagara districts of Bengaluru on January 10 and 11 (IMD).

  • Today (Saturday): Overall the region is forecasted to receive rain with light drizzle in some areas. Rainfall rates are highest in the late evening and at night.
  • Tomorrow (Sunday): Moisture persisted; maybe some early morning fog will keep visibility on highways. There may be light showers, adding to the “cold factor.”

Security and Health Promotion

Safety and Health Advisory

  • Considering the sharp temperature drop and drenching surface matter, health authorities have been giving citizens a series of orders:
  • Keep the Vulnerable Safe: Older citizens and children must wear appropriate warm clothes to protect themselves from respiratory diseases.
  • Travel Advice: Travelers (especially heading toward an airport) should beware of thick fog during the early morning (4-8am) when heavy mist is everywhere.
  • Farmers’ Warning: Farmers in the neighboring rural villages are told to protect their harvested crops (including ragi and maize) against any unusual moisture.

Tuesday, January 13, sees weather returning to its dry January heat and cooling.
