One police operation in Gurugram ended in a deadly clash that saw four alleged gangsters get killed and three police personnel injured. The gunfight, during an operation to catch the suspects, brought home once again the huge burden of organized crime on the police and the difficulties faced by law enforcement to penetrate such networks.
According to police officials, the operation began when security agencies received very specific information about the movement of armed criminals believed to be involved in multiple serious crimes. A joint police team immediately set up a trap in the suspected area to catch the accused.
The gangsters opened fire as police officers attempted to stop the suspects in an effort to escape arrest, police said. Police fired back, with a long-running fight going on. Four suspected gang members were killed at the scene. Three police officers were injured in the exchange and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The injured officers are being treated and are still in stable condition, the police said. Senior police officers went to the hospital and assessed their condition and praised the courage of the officers in the operation.
The area was cordoned off and the search was conducted in that area. Investigators recovered a number of firearms, ammunition, and other materials from the site. Forensic experts were involved in the investigation and evidence was collected.
Police are working to obtain the identities of the deceased persons and confirm their involvement in various crimes. Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspects are linked to extortion, illegal possession of weapons, and other violent acts. The gang might have had links to larger interstate criminal syndicates operating in northern India, investigators are looking for, they added.
However, senior officials said the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and was made in accordance with legal procedure. A magisterial inquiry, which is standard practice in police encounter cases, is expected to be conducted to determine how the fire took place. The recovered weapons, ballistic evidence, and forensic evidence are expected to be key to the investigation.
The incident resulted in increased security in and around the encounter site. Police were put to work to keep law and order and prevent any future incidents. Traffic in nearby areas was temporarily halted as authorities secured the location and completed forensic documentation.
The encounter has once again made organized crime a persistent problem in rapidly growing urban centres such as Gurugram. Law enforcement agencies have intensified surveillance of criminal gangs involved in extortion, contract killings, arms trafficking, and other serious offences. State and central agencies’ coordination of intelligence-sharing is said to have helped remove such networks from power, officials say.
Investing in intelligence-led policing is becoming a central part of the fight against organized crime, security experts say. But they also stress that every police encounter must be an impartial investigation to be transparent and fair so that there is transparency and rule of law as well, and every police encounter must be thoroughly investigated to achieve accountability and adherence to the law.
