Karnataka Weather Update: IMD Predicts Unseasonal Rain Amid Severe Cold Wave

Karnataka is currently grappling with a severe winter spell as temperatures continue to plummet across the state. However, in a surprising turn of events, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh forecast predicting unseasonal rainfall in several regions, a development that is expected to further complicate the already deteriorating weather conditions.

IMD Bengaluru center has noted a significant shift in atmospheric patterns. While most of the state has been reeling under a dry and intense cold wave, a localized cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal is now drawing moisture toward the southern peninsula. This is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall to South Interior Karnataka and the Coastal belt over the next few days, clashing with the existing cold winds.

The Intensity of the Cold Wave

North Interior Karnataka remains the worst hit by the winter chill. Districts such as Bidar, Vijayapura, and Bagalkote have recorded minimum temperatures as low as $7.5\degree\text{C}$ to $9\degree\text{C}$, which is several degrees below the seasonal normal. In Bengaluru, the city recorded a minimum of $13.5\degree\text{C}$ today, with suburban areas like Devanahalli and Sarjapur seeing the mercury dip closer to $11\degree\text{C}$. The IMD warns that once the predicted rainfall occurs, the "damp-cold" effect will make the perceived temperature feel significantly lower, increasing the risk of seasonal illnesses.

District-Wise Rainfall Forecast

The unseasonal rain is expected to hit between December 26 and December 29, 2025:

  • Coastal Karnataka: Districts like Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are on alert for moderate showers.
  • South Interior: Bengaluru (Urban and Rural), Kolar, and Chikkaballapur may witness overcast skies and scattered drizzle.
  • Malnad Region: High-altitude areas in Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru are likely to experience heavy fog and light rain, making road travel hazardous.

Impact on Fog and Visibility

One of the primary concerns for the weather department is the "Post-Rain Fog." The moisture left behind by the showers, combined with the low temperatures, is expected to create dense fog across the state's highways. Visibility could drop below 50 meters during early morning hours, particularly on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway and the NH-48 stretch towards Hubballi.
