DMK leader K N Nehru has said if corruption happened during DMK regime, then those responsible should go through the current Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The comment comes as an increasingly important political debate in Tamil Nadu on accountability, allegations of wrongdoing and how new government should handle cases linked to its predecessor.
The statement is from a senior DMK leader at a time when the party is in opposition following the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. TVK, headed by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerged as the governing force after the election, taking charge as Chief Minister in May.
Nehru has been one of the DMK's most prominent leaders for years and has been integral in the organisation and elections of the party. His political power is mainly felt in Tiruchirappalli and central Tamil Nadu. Vijay faced the DMK directly in 2026 election campaign in Tiruchirappalli East, a constituency that is a political fortress of Nehru.
The latter takes the position that TVK will be able to introduce a new form of governance. Vijay's party has always been a political alternative and has taken on corruption, transparency and accountability as a principal concern since entering electoral politics. A big winner in the 2026 Assembly election and state government of Tamil Nadu, it was the party which grew.
Criminal activities of the previous administration are likely to continue to be a major political issue, but allegations should be investigated very carefully and in court. An accusation by itself does not imply wrongdoing and responsibility must be established by evidence and due process.
The issue has already been in the news on allegations of past DMK ministers and government departments. For example, reports in June 2026 said that Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption had registered an FIR against former minister K N Nehru on an alleged cash-for-jobs case. The report also said that Madras High Court had curtailed any further action pending a court hearing.
These are reasons why statements that call for accountability are likely to capture much political attention. TVK government supporters will probably consider investigations into alleged wrongdoing under the previous administration an indication of their government’s transparency and DMK supporters will probably be concerned about the way those investigations are conducted.
For any government, dealing with allegations against a prior administration is a challenge. The investigation needs to be based on documentary evidence, financial records, official procedures and witness accounts and people should be protected from harm. Political change should not automatically determine guilt or innocence.
Nehru's statement can be understood as an acceptance that if there is credible evidence of wrongdoing, authorities should take action regardless of political affiliation. Such an attitude would put accountability above partisanship and could be a key part of the political dialogue between DMK and TVK.
The change in government has already changed Tamil Nadu's political landscape drastically. Vijay's victory ended the DMK's period in government and brought TVK into power for the first time. Many senior DMK leaders faced challenging electoral contests. The election-result reporting indicates a good performance of TVK across the state.
For DMK, the present period is likely to see it rebuild its organization and come to the forefront of the opposition. TVK is moving from electoral campaigning to governing the state and fulfilling its promises. This transition will see statements from senior opposition leaders like Nehru closely watched.
Corruption is not just about individual political figures; it is a bigger problem than that. It is about government procurement, recruitment, public spending, administrative transparency and oversight mechanisms. A government that wants to establish credibility in the matter would have to show that investigations are conducted consistently and the cases of misdeeds are investigated and the right legal consequences met.

As Tamil Nadu's new political phase takes shape, the relationship between TVK and DMK is going to be the major focus of public attention. Nehru's comments add to that relationship by placing the issue of alleged corruption and accountability at the heart of the political debate.
And any action against individuals accused of corruption must be based on evidence and legal processes rather than political statements. If an investigation finds wrongdoing, then those responsible will be held guilty. But how TVK will handle such cases and how this will become a defining characteristic of its administration in the next few months?
