The Government of India made a formal request for all Indian nationals, including students, pilgrims, business travelers, and tourists,
to leave Iran by any means. The new warning arrives as mass anti-government protests nationwide begin their third week, with a reported death toll of over 2,500.
Diminished Security and Increased Tensions
The crisis in Iran has transitioned from economic unrest that broke out in the wake of a record devaluation of the national currency to widespread political demonstrations across all 31 provinces. The Indian Embassy’s recommendation for an early exit comes after news that security forces have cracked down particularly hard, and that there may be regional military escalation.
Among the leading events before the advisory are:
- Mighty Protests in Iran: Enormous demonstrations in Tehran and major cities have incited violent skirmishes, including burning of vehicles and disruption of communication in many regions.
- Geopolitical Risks: US presidential administration warnings of military intervention and escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran have heightened the threat of conflict near American bases in the region.
- A Crackdown on Judiciary: Iran’s judiciary had recently indicated fast-track trials and possible executions for those detained during the demonstrations, further dislocating the public and internal atmosphere.
Decrees for Indian Nationals Guidance
The MEA has yet again “strongly advised” Indians to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran until further notice. The Embassy has instructed all persons already in the country on the following:
- Leave the country NOW: Take commercial flights or any means of transport to leave the country without delay.
- Be warned: Use extreme caution and avoid anything with the slightest threat of protests or demonstrations.
- Document Preparedness: Always have passports, visas, and identification documents at ready to hand.
Mandatory Registration
Upon the completion of a citizenship verification, all the national residents of India must log on to the MEA online portal immediately. If disruption in the internet prevents this, it is hoped families in India will perform the registration on their behalf.
