Lenskart Viral Video Row – Debate Over Religious Expression and Workplace Policies

An internationally shared video now, a viral document, that is now seen worldwide and has sparked debate and conflict between several Hindu activists and Lenskart's staff after it caught them confronting some of its members of a group has gone viral. In the video, activists ask employees questions after discovering a small temple in a lower cupboard within a store. Allegations spread, however, that an employee who faced fear of reprisal kept the temple there. The activists want the temple to be in better-disproportioned visibility and a better looking spot as a statement of religious reverence, the video says.

The result quickly turned ugly as the video spread and became a flash point on social media: The whole country made great efforts to protect those people doing protests in a variety of locales and regions. Meanwhile, it evoked mixed reactions (support from public opinion, and at times disputes over how well to manage an employee in his or her area of work). The instance has sparked dialogue around corporate policies regarding religious expression in workplaces, too. While many businesses have policies that should remain neutral and representative, the way a policy is read and executed can be very different.

The only available data is until the date we get it because, at the moment, we do not know whether the location of the temple was decided through some approved policy or employee opinion. Critics of the confrontation say worksites are supposed to be neutral situations where people from all walks of life may not feel the fear and pressure of their experience and are treated more generally as if they had respect.

Still others, to be sure, are saying the symbolism of a person’s beliefs should be visible, personal religious symbols should be visible (it is essential that they should not impede normal business operations but must be clear, above all so they don’t interfere with someone’s religious religion). But the controversy has become more than a personal matter. There is certainly no such official explanation currently available, for the specifics listed in the video. It illustrates the fragile balance companies have to navigate between reverence for private belief systems and professionalism and inclusiveness. It’s also a reminder of how easily local events can become the subjects of national discussions in an era of viral video.

As more members begin to talk about the issue, many are calling for clarity and sensitivity not confrontation, or at least discussion. We pay attention to the “real” details employee well-being, and mutual respect in both public and business environments.
