Mysuru residents will be subject to a planned seven-hour power outage on Thursday, July 16, as part of a major infrastructure upgrade led by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC). So while this may cause home-based and business-related inconvenience for some, the project will, in the eyes of authorities, be a fundamental step towards improving the city’s electricity distribution network and a long-term power reliability system that is needed.
CESC said the power shutdown is to support ongoing work to install underground cables in the Nazarbad–Ramanuja Mohalla division. For example, we hope to replace old overhead power lines with modern underground electrical cables, which will improve safety, minimise maintenance and minimise power disruption due to weather or damage to infrastructure.
As part of the project, electricity supply under the 11 kV Ramanuja Feeder will be suspended from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, resulting in a continuous seven-hour outage in several residential and commercial areas of the city.
Areas affected by the power outage
The shutdown will be critical to some of Mysuru’s busiest neighbourhoods and significant institutions. Residents living near JSS Hospital and surrounding communities should make some kind of arrangements ahead of time.
The affected areas include:
- JSS Hospital surroundings
- Basaveshwara Road 7th Cross
- Basaveshwara Road 8th Cross
- Ramanuja Road from 1st Cross to 19th Cross
- Hosabandikeri
- Medarakeri
- Chamundipuram Circle
- Areas surrounding St. Mary's School
- Nearby residential colonies and commercial establishments
Businesses, offices, educational institutions, clinics and retail outlets in those localities may be disrupted during the scheduled maintenance period.
Why is the Project important?
The underground cable project is part of CESC's larger plan to modernise Mysuru’s power system. Overhead electric lines are susceptible to storms, falling trees, vehicle accidents, and other environmental elements that can cause power interruptions. Underground cables are more reliable and are also safer for public safety, and provide a cleaner urban scene because you do not have to put up many roadside electric poles and wires.
Once it is finished, the project will bring about massive improvements in the quality and stability of electricity supply in the affected areas and reduce unexpected outages.
Precautionary Measures for Residents
CESC has advised residents and businesses to prepare in advance for the scheduled shutdown. Residents and businesses are advised to charge up mobile phones, laptops, power banks, etc., before the outage begins.
People who work from home should make alternative arrangements to get internet connectivity and ensure that backup power systems like UPS units are fully charged. Businesses that rely heavily on an uninterrupted power supply should activate backup generators to minimise operational disruption.
Healthcare facilities, clinics, and commercial establishments will have to keep emergency power systems ready to keep services running during the maintenance period.
Possible traffic and public inconvenience
As part of the underground cable installation work, excavation works can be performed along some roads. This may result in traffic congestion, dust and movement restrictions in some areas. The project teams have advised the public to cooperate with the project teams and follow traffic advisories.
Although the seven-hour outage may cause a short-term inconvenience, officials stressed that the infrastructure upgrade is a long-term investment to provide safer, more reliable and efficient power to Mysuru residents. With the modernisation, the city is also working towards a better urban infrastructure and better public utility services.
