Residents in several parts of Bengaluru are expected to face power disruptions on Friday, August 29, as the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) carries out quarterly maintenance and emergency repair works.
BESCOM has issued a notification informing consumers about the scheduled electricity outage and has advised them to make necessary arrangements in advance. The maintenance activities are aimed at improving the reliability and efficiency of the power distribution network, and residents are encouraged to plan their daily activities accordingly during the outage period.
According to the power utility company, the outage is necessary to perform maintenance work on the substations operated by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL). Maintenance works are carried out periodically in order to maintain the electricity distribution network functioning and to minimise the chance of breakdowns in the future.
Power will be interrupted from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm in the area where we will have to shut down this time. During these six hours, electricity supply will be halted in some areas under the Rajanukunte and Kadugodi substation jurisdiction. Residents, businesses, educational institutions and offices in the affected areas will need to make alternate arrangements to avoid loss of power.
The most likely areas to experience power outages are Honnenahalli, Singanayakanahalli, Rajanukunte, Marasandra, Chellahalli, Dibburu, Kakolu, Bellathur, Kadugodi, Channasandra, Immadihalli, Hagadur, Prashanth Layout, and the surrounding areas along Whitefield Main Road. These neighbourhoods are spread in the northern and eastern parts of Bengaluru and are residential and rapidly developing commercial areas.
Whitefield, one of Bengaluru’s most important IT hubs, is one of the most affected areas. Many workers who work from home, startups and businesses in and around Whitefield will still be affected in the short term with short-term problems. Electricity users who use electricity for online work, education, medical equipment, or other basic services would need backup power options.
BESCOM said that maintenance is critical to the reliability of the network and the continuous power supply. Checking transformers, feeders, substations and transmission infrastructure for problems is crucial to detect problems before they become a big problem, for instance. Some maintenance might be short-term inconveniences, but they’re more about increasing service quality for customers, they said.
The utility is also calling for the public to work with BESCOM and KPTCL employees during maintenance. It is advised to charge mobile phones, laptops, power banks, and other essential devices before the outage period. E-commerce companies that are dependent on electricity would also have to plan their operations around the outage schedule so as to minimise productivity loss.
Bengaluru has experienced several scheduled maintenance-related power interruptions in the past few months as the city’s power networks continue to be upgraded to meet increasing demand. Rapid urbanisation in Bengaluru, particularly in Whitefield and North Bengaluru, has made the need for a well-established power infrastructure more important.
