A Zero FIR was registered at Noida's Expressway police station on July 29, and then transferred to Delhi Police because the alleged incident took place in the national capital.
The FIR also raised another layer of controversy because it listed Singh's age as 25. But a later apology video on the Internet showed that the person appeared to be 15 years old. In that video, she sat with folded hands and apologised for her comments, saying that she had been influenced by others at the protest. The authenticity of the apology video could not be independently verified.
The age discrepancy remains one of the most talked about aspects of the case. Police records published by several media outlets claimed that the accused was a 25-year-old woman but the person who was in the apology video was a minor. There are no official records in the case to tell the public the facts about what happened and how things turned out.
The video has now raised more questions. The Tribune reported that the fresh recording could not be independently verified for the date or location of recording. Singh's lawyer Anil Singh said that the video was not AI-generated, but did not say whether the person in the video was in fact a person. The publication also reported that the video was posted on a new Instagram account related to Singh.
The political reaction has been swift. The Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress have posted the video and accused the government of intimidating or harassing a young protester in the video. But their charges have not yet been independently verified. The parties have also used the episode to raise wider questions about freedom of expression, how we deal with political dissent in India, and whether young protesters should continue to face legal or social pressure for making controversial statements.
The controversy had already taken a turn when PM Modi spoke about the original incident. After the apology video, Modi said that while the language used against him and his late mother was objectionable, young people involved in such incidents should be guided rather than simply punished. His words were interpreted as an appeal to forgive young protesters involved in the controversy.
At the same time, news about the family's situation has added emotional complexity to the case. Singh’s mother had earlier asked for protection, claiming that the family had faced threats and had been unable to return home. It was also reported that the family had moved away from their Noida home after the incident. These claims have fueled the opposition’s argument that the fallout extended beyond the original police case.

But supporters of the government have argued that Singh must be held accountable for the language said to have been used in the original protest video. So, the debate is now essentially between questions about accountability for public speech and whether the consequences faced by a young protester have gone beyond legitimate legal proceedings.
For now, the new video has just added another dimension to a long-standing dispute. Questions about Singh’s actual age, the circumstances of the FIR, the authenticity and provenance of the new recording, and harassment allegations remain open in the public domain. Unless police or other competent authorities can give further clarification, claims made by either side should be treated as allegations rather than established facts.
The episode also illustrates how quickly political issues can escalate in the social media age.
