Free online Aadhaar update is extended by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the nation's government, which would be providing tremendous relief to millions of Aadhaar holders across India.
Allowing people to continue updating their Aadhaar ID and address forms without paying a fee online is now part of this extra extension with the official UIDAI portal. The aim is to encourage people (those who were issued Aadhaar cards a few years ago) to update and correct their Aadhaar ID, particularly those who may show stale information.
The free update facility will only be accessible through the official online Aadhaar site, UIDAI noted. Users visiting physical Aadhaar enrolment centres may still pay applicable service charges for offline updates. The authority has advised residents on more than one occasion to update supporting documents when their Aadhaar has not been updated in the last ten years.
Keeping records in good order makes authentication easier and makes it easier for the user, including Aadhaar-linked government schemes, banking, telecom verification, and various digital services of the Aadhaar service, to get access. Users can upload proof of identity and proof of address documents via the official UIDAI website for a free online update service.
In most instances, the process enables residents to revalidate demographics without a physical Aadhaar centre. As Aadhaar remains one of India’s main identity verification systems, the update is an increasingly important process.
Aadhaar has become an essential device for banking, PAN linking, passport applications, SIM verification, LPG subsidies, welfare schemes, tax filings and many government services. The deadline extension is intended to alleviate inconvenience and facilitate broader engagement of those citizens who have yet to complete the updates, officials said.
Previous reports suggest that many Aadhaar holders, particularly older individuals and rural dwellers, had demanded more time to complete the update process. To modify an Aadhaar record online, residents must log on with their Aadhaar number and OTP verification via the UIDAI portal.
Users can then scan copies of the supporting document to upload to the application and request it digitally through the app. The online service typically spans demographic updates, including address validation and document maintenance. But for changes like biometric data, photographs, fingerprints or iris scans, it still forces you to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.
UIDAI has also retained its warning that residents should not access Aadhaar-related services through unauthorised agents or third-party websites. Officials are encouraging citizens to use the official UIDAI portal and authorised centres only for Aadhaar updates to prevent fraud or abuse of personal data.
Cybersecurity experts have also highlighted the need to verify Aadhaar-linked mobile numbers regularly and that personal information is being preserved to mitigate the chances of identity-based fraud. The extension comes as digital identity verification is taking centre stage in India, whether for public or private sector clients within the state or in the private sector.
Newer Aadhaar data aids in reducing authentication failures and further reduces service delivery time in several sectors. Residents wishing to benefit from the free update facility need to complete the process before this revised deadline expires.
Uploaded documents must also be valid, clear and consistent with existing Aadhaar details, or you risk being rejected during verification. Details about Aadhaar updates, document requirements (if applicable), and online procedures are also available via the official UIDAI website.
