A recent encounter between Commonwealth Games gold medallist and para-athlete Dilip Gavit has generated much public debate. Gavit, who has recently written history on the international stage, was unable to meet Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray in Nashik on a visit to meet him and his coach for almost two hours before ultimately leaving the venue.
The incident occurred during Raj Thackeray’s two-day tour of Nashik. Gavit’s coach Vaijnath Kale said they had received an invitation to meet the MNS leader, but he was already in closed-door meetings and political events with local people. As the wait went on for more than two hours, coach Kale felt frustrated by the long wait and wondered why Gavit and Kale were invited as top achievers but then didn’t wait for them to attend when they were on a very tight training schedule.
A video of local party workers trying to placate Gavit and Kale and asking for patience circulated on social media in quick succession, but Gavit and Kale were not there for the meeting. Though he himself seemed disappointed at initial sight, Kale later downplayed any deep-seated political friction, saying that while scheduling constraints may be the result of time constraints, athletes who bring glory to the nation also deserve time efficiency. MNS did not have any official response to the time delay soon after.
This was just a few days after Gavit’s huge win at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 where he etched his name into the history books. Gavit won the gold medal in the men’s 100m T47 with a record-breaking and season-best time of 10.71 seconds, leading a historic one-two performance for India with fellow Indian Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath winning the silver medal.
Born in Toran Dongari, a small village close to Nashik, Gavit has blossomed into an international superstar as a result of this and a lot more. A product of farming life, Gavit got injured in childhood and never left the village at all and developed his talent in sprinting as he was exposed to coach Vaijnath Kale, who helped him develop into a para-athletic hero.
Gavit has achieved so much in his career so far. In Hangzhou, he won a gold medal in the men's 400m T47 at the Asian Para Games in 2022, which was India’s 100th medal in the continental competition, and represented India at the Paris Paralympics. Gavit is a world-class athlete and has been one of India’s biggest sports stars for quite some time.
