India's upcoming ODI series against West Indies will not have several of the team's regular players. One of the biggest names missing from the series will be Shreyas Iyer.
Iyer is India's ODI vice-captain and has been an important part of the middle order. His absence is therefore a big talking point ahead of the three-match series.
However, there is no major injury concern behind his absence. The main reason is the clash between the West Indies ODI series and the 2026 Asian Games.
Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of India's men's cricket team for the Asian Games. The cricket competition at the Games will take place in Japan during the same period as India's ODI series against West Indies.
Why Is Shreyas Iyer Missing The West Indies Series?
India's three-match ODI series against West Indies is scheduled to take place from September 27 to October 3. At almost the same time, the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games will be held from September 24 to October 1.
Because of the overlapping schedules, players selected for India's Asian Games team will not be available for the West Indies ODIs. This includes Shreyas Iyer, who will lead the Indian side in the T20 cricket event at the Asian Games.
Iyer is not the only major Indian player who will miss the ODI series. Jasprit Bumrah, Ishan Kishan, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy are also part of the Asian Games squad and are expected to be unavailable for the West Indies series.
This means India will need to use a different combination for the ODIs.
The absence of Iyer is particularly important because he has been a regular option in India's middle order. He has generally batted at No. 4 and has played an important role in India's ODI plans.
With Iyer unavailable, the selectors will have to decide who should take his place in the middle order.
Tilak Varma is one of the players being considered for the role. His left-handed batting could also give India a better left-right combination in the top order. Ruturaj Gaikwad is another name in contention for a place in the ODI squad.
The timing of the series also means that the selectors have an unusual challenge. India are preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but several regular players will be busy with the Asian Games.
The situation could therefore allow younger players to make their case for a place in the ODI setup.
For Iyer, however, the Asian Games will be a major assignment of their own. He was appointed captain of India's men's cricket team for the tournament, with Tilak Varma named vice-captain. The squad also includes players such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Jasprit Bumrah.
India are the defending champions in men's cricket at the Asian Games. The tournament will therefore give Iyer an important opportunity to lead the side and compete for another gold medal.
The clash also shows how packed India's international cricket schedule has become. Instead of sending the same group of players to both events, the team management and selectors will have to divide their resources between the Asian Games and the West Indies series.
So, Shreyas Iyer's absence from the West Indies ODIs should not be viewed as a setback caused by injury or a selection issue.
He will simply be on another important assignment for India.
While a different Indian team takes on West Indies in the ODI series, Iyer will be leading the men's cricket team at the Asian Games.
For Indian cricket, it will be an unusual period with two important competitions taking place almost at the same time. It will also give several players outside the regular ODI group a chance to step up and show that they can be part of India's plans for the future.
