The holiday has also been announced in neighbouring Krishna district. Schools (government and private), junior and degree colleges, and Anganwadi centres are closed. Authorities have decided to minimise risks to students and staff as the cyclone affects normal life across the region.
Cyclone Murasu Makes Landfall Along Andhra Pradesh Coast
Cyclone Murasu intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal before moving towards south Andhra Pradesh coast. The IMD said that the storm was likely to cross the coast between Nellore and Narsapur (close to Ongole) in the early hours of November 3.
The cyclone brought sustained winds of around 100–110 kmph (with gusts up to 120 kmph) at landfall. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall was forecast over several coastal and adjoining districts.
Areas close to the coast have been most affected by the storm — strong winds, heavy rain and possible flooding could disrupt transportation and essential services.
NTR District Collector Issues Safety Advisory
NTR District Collector Lakshmi Sha appealed to people to stay indoors and not travel unnecessarily as heavy to very heavy rainfall is continuing in different parts of the district.
The Collector went to the Budameru area to see the situation and review the impact of cyclone. There were no major problems reported there at that time.
In order to avoid landslides in Mogalrajapuram, some families have also been shifted to relief camps.
The district administration held a meeting with officials and issued instructions regarding preparedness measures for public safety. The collector has requested shops and shopping complexes to remain closed on Tuesday due to inclement weather.
Parents have also been told to keep children indoors and not let them go out unnecessarily.
Eight Andhra Pradesh Districts Announce School Holidays
Apart from NTR district, several other districts in Andhra Pradesh have also announced the closure of educational institutions on November 3.
- The districts reported to have declared holidays are:
- NTR
- Krishna
- Guntur
- Bapatla
- Palnadu
- Prakasam
- Nellore
- Markapuram
The district administrations have issued precautionary instructions keeping in view heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
However, holiday announcements are district orders, so students and parents should check notifications from their District Collectors and educational authorities for latest updates.
Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Disrupt Normal Life
Cyclone Murasu has already disrupted normal activities in several parts of Andhra Pradesh. In Vijayawada, heavy rainfall led to waterlogging on Bandar Road and Polyclinic Road. Some areas of One Town have also seen accumulation of water, which inconvenienced commuters.
Strong winds and heavy rain could also further disrupt road transport, electricity supply and other essential services.
The cyclone has also affected air connectivity to and from Vijayawada. 12 flight services were cancelled on Monday alone, while eight more IndiGo services were cancelled on Tuesday, taking the total number of cancellations over two days to 20.
Passengers were advised to check their flight status with airlines before travelling to the airport.

Safety Instructions for Residents
Heavy rain and strong winds are forecast in affected areas, so authorities have asked residents to follow official weather warnings and take precautions.
People living in low-lying areas should be alert for possible flooding and obey evacuation orders if given. People have also been warned not to drive on waterlogged roads, stay clear of fallen electric wires, and not to park under large trees.
Fishermen should follow restrictions on going out to sea; people living in vulnerable coastal areas need to be prepared for changing weather conditions.
When Will Schools Reopen in NTR District?
Schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres in NTR and Krishna districts will remain closed on Tuesday, November 3. The reopening schedule will depend on the weather situation and further instructions from district administrations.
There is no statewide school closure order for all districts in Andhra Pradesh. Parents and students should take official announcements on board, not messages that are circulating on social media (verified or not).
While Cyclone Murasu continues to affect parts of the state, student safety, emergency preparedness, and public cooperation are the administration’s immediate priorities.
