CoolFly Urban Takes Personal Flight to New Heights: China Unveils Standing eVTOL Platform for Urban Mobility

The future of personal transportation may be nearer than many thought. Chinese aerospace startup CoolFly unveiled its innovative Urban eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) platform, a standing personal aircraft that can be operated in the high-flying city and, at the same time, take people to the top of the city with it. The launch marks another significant step in the rapidly growing urban air mobility industry, which will revolutionise how people travel through cities over the next decades.

The CoolFly Urban, launched by the Hangzhou-based company last month, is not a helicopter, drone or small aircraft in nature but rather a small flying platform on which a rider stands and is lifted by four powerful ducted electric fans into the air. The intelligent vehicle is designed for recreational purposes, use in cities and a safe urban mode.

The Urban eVTOL is also rather small in size. At about 3.5 meters in width, it is easy to manoeuvre and stable as well as lean while flying. It can carry riders weighing up to 90 kilograms and can hit 70 km/h with fast track speed.

CoolFly says that the flying platform can stay airborne for 11 minutes on a single charge. This time limit may not seem much when compared to traditional transportation methods, but it is enough to help with fun, tourism, training and even short-distance aerial travel.

The company has put a lot of emphasis on ease of use. The Urban eVTOL is unlike helicopters or conventional aircraft that require extensive training and licensing to fly them, in that it uses artificial intelligence to guide the riders. There are many safety features CoolFly has to ensure that personal flying devices are safe. There are enclosed ducted propellers that protect riders and bystanders from crashing into spinning blades. Industry experts see projects like the CoolFly Urban as part of a broader transformation in transportation technology.
