Pakistan Foils Suicide Attack in South Waziristan, Four Terrorists Killed Amid Rising Militant Violence

Pakistan's security forces on Thursday foiled an attempted suicide attack on a military post in Lower South Waziristan, killing four terrorists before they could carry out the attack. The attack comes at a time when there is an avalanche of militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where security forces are battling insurgent groups in recent months.

According to daily Pakistani newspaper Dawn, terrorists tried to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into a security forces' post in the Kari Kot area of Wana. Security personnel had detected the threat and intercepted the attackers before the vehicle could reach its target.

The suicide bomber was killed along with three other militants during the operation. There were no casualties among security personnel, the official said, and clearance operations continued in the area to rule out the presence of any others.

Suicide Attack Averted in South Waziristan

The foiled attack is yet another reminder of the security issues in South Waziristan, a region in which militant groups have long hovered along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The authorities have closed the area and are now searching for threats and searching for the remaining ones.

The attempted bombing follows a similar incident in May when security forces prevented another suicide attack on a military post near Azam Warsak Bazaar. That attack claimed one civilian’s life and 15 others were injured.

It also mirrors a major assault in November 2025 on Cadet College Wana by militants trying to target students and staff. Security forces neutralised the attackers before they could inflict significant damage.

Three Policemen Killed in Separate Terror Attack

In another high-profile security incident, three police personnel were killed and 19 others injured after terrorists attacked a police convoy in the Lower Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Wednesday.

According to officials quoted by PTI, militants first threw hand grenades at the convoy before opening heavy fire with automatic weapons around Ladam Top at Haider.

The attackers also set two police vehicles ablaze during the attack before fleeing the scene.

The injured officers were transferred to nearby hospitals and security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down those responsible.

At the same time, terrorists also attacked a police station, taking the number of injured security personnel in the day’s violence to 34.

Terror Violence Continues to Rise

According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), Pakistan experienced a severe deterioration of its security situation during May, with militant attacks significantly increasing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

The Pakistani security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations under Operation Shaban, in which they have been targeting militant hideouts across border districts to eradicate these hideouts.

The operation involving the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, and local police has so far led to the elimination of dozens of militants since early July. Almost 100 militants have been killed so far, according to the information provided by local media.

TTP Remains the Biggest Threat

The most active militant group in the region remains the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) or Pakistan Taliban.

The Pakistani government officially refers to the group as 'Fitna al-Khawarij'.

After the Taliban came back to power in Afghanistan in 2021, the TTP greatly expanded its operations and attacks intensified significantly during 2024 and 2025.

Apart from the TTP, splinter militant groups, such as the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), continue to attack Pakistani security forces and sometimes civilian targets. Security experts believe that these groups take advantage of the rugged landscape and the porous Afghanistan-Pakistan border to launch cross-border attacks.

The recent incidents only underline the security challenges that Pakistan is facing as it tries to curb the growing menace of terrorism in the western border regions of Pakistan.
