Himachal Pradesh Lashed by Heavy Rainfall; Overflowing Nakki Khadd Disrupts Movement in Jaswan Pragpur

Many districts of Himachal Pradesh have been flooded with heavy rainfall since last night. Many of the surrounding areas in Himachal Pradesh have been inundated with torrential downpour, and water levels are extremely high in rivers, streams, and seasonal water channels in the state. So, many areas in Himachal Pradesh are experiencing heavy rainfall, and road and rail traffic are at risk from the heavy rainfall and road accidents.

The Jaswan Pragpur area is the most striking example in this regard, as the so-called dry Nakki Khadd has turned into a fast-flowing stream after heavy rains. Residents say the khadd, usually completely dry during much of the year, is now carrying a lot of water. Water has now crossed the road and is affecting vehicles’ movement and raising concerns among local communities.

The sudden increase in Nakki Khadd indicates the impact of monsoon activity in the hill state. Seasonal streams and khadds in Himachal Pradesh can swell rapidly during times of torrential monsoon, especially if rain continues for several hours. That can make it prone to flash floods in low-lying areas and can create obstacles for drivers attempting to cross flooded roads.

Jaswan Pragpur residents thought the situation was unusual, and the khadd is rarely seen flowing with such force. Photos and videos of muddy water rushing down the road on social media have also caught the eye of people across the state. Local authorities have advised commuters to take care and avoid crossing waterlogged areas of the road where the depth and speed of the current can be very difficult to discern.

The heavy rainfall has not been limited to Jaswan Pragpur only. There are some areas in Himachal Pradesh where there is heavy rainfall, resulting in water accumulation within the city and increased pressure on drainage systems. Authorities are also monitoring landslide-prone areas to check the safety of people, as heavy rainfall can affect soil stability in mountainous terrain and lead to road blockages.

Monsoon rains are a crucial source of water for Himachal Pradesh, helping to replenish reservoirs, rivers, and groundwater. But there are challenges even during periods of very heavy rain. The state has had many weather-related disasters in recent years, such as flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides that have caused infrastructure damage and affected local communities.

Local disaster management teams and local administration officials are monitoring vulnerable spots and are prepared to act if conditions deteriorate. Residents living near rivers, streams, and seasonal water channels should stay alert and follow official advisories. Travellers to hilly areas should also consult weather forecasts before going to the area.

The overflowing Nakki Khadd is just another example of how quickly the weather can change during the monsoon season. What is typically a dry channel has turned into a powerful watercourse within a couple of hours, showing the extreme rainfall in the area.

As rain continues in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, authorities are expected to remain on high alert. Residents are being advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from swollen water bodies, and report any emergencies to local officials. With more rainfall possible in the coming days, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and minimising disruption caused by the ongoing monsoon activity.
