Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar will visit the drought-hit areas of Chitradurga district on Saturday to assess the situation on the ground and review the state’s response to the ongoing water crisis. Such visits show that not only is Karnataka trying to tackle the problem of poor rainfall, but also agriculture, drinking water supply and rural livelihoods are being tackled.
As he goes about his trip, the Chief Minister shared details of his itinerary on social media, saying that he would personally visit the drought-hit areas before chairing a comprehensive review meeting on the drought situation and the progress of key development projects across the Bengaluru Division.
In this regard, Shivakumar said that the review meeting will focus on the uninterrupted supply of drinking water, protect the interests of farmers affected by drought conditions, and accelerate the development of infrastructure and development in the region that is imperative for growth.
"Today, I will visit the drought-affected areas of Chitradurga district to see things for ourselves. And after that, I will chair a review meeting on the drought situation and progress of key development works throughout the Bengaluru Division. We will talk to each other on drinking water, protecting our farmers’ interests, and the way development works proceed. And every decision we take will be based on our people and our ability to bring about timely, effective governance,” the Chief Minister said.
The visit comes at a time when many parts of Karnataka still have a rainfall deficit, affecting agricultural productivity and creating concerns over water availability. Chitradurga, a district that depends on monsoon rains, is under pressure on water resources, making government intervention essential to support local communities.
For this purpose, government officials from different departments will be at the review meeting, where they will review how drought relief measures have been implemented and what is the status of drinking water schemes, irrigation works, and other ongoing development projects. It would also allow the government to assess the situation of resources, distribution of relief, and contingency plans for the current drought situation.
Farmer welfare is likely to be an important topic for future discussions. The loss of crops due to low rainfall greatly impacts farmers' incomes, and the state government should consider relief programs, better water management, and agricultural assistance programs.
