In a shocking incident reported from Tumakuru district, unidentified miscreants allegedly destroyed 63 arecanut saplings belonging to a farmer in YN Hosakote of Pavagada Taluk. The farmer, who had put in huge time and money to build the plantation on his land, was crying in tears.
The destruction came to light when the farmer visited his agricultural field as usual in the morning. He discovered several arecanut plants that were growing on his one-and-a-half-acre plot had been deliberately damaged.
63 Arecanut Saplings Destroyed Overnight
The farmer who has been affected is Krishnappa, a resident of the area. According to information available, the arecanut saplings had been cultivated on about 1.5 acres of agricultural land.
The plants were said to be close to bearing produce, so it’s particularly painful for the farmer. Unidentified people allegedly entered the plantation overnight and destroyed 63 arecanut saplings.
It’s believed to have happened in darkness.
When Krishnappa went to his farm in the morning, he discovered the damaged plants and realised that the plantation had been deliberately targeted.
Farmer Suspects Local Residents
Hence, people around the area are suspicious, it said.
The farmer wants the police to investigate and find out who is behind the incident and to be able to catch up with the persons behind it, he added.
The reason why arecanut saplings were destroyed is not clear at this point. Possible disputes, personal enmity or other reasons might be explored as part of investigators’ inquiry.
The farmer is believed to have suffered a huge financial blow since the plants were close to producing produce; the plants were apparently near to producing produce; the farmer is believed to have been financially ruined.
Major Loss For Farmer
For farmers, plantations such as arecanut gardens are a long-term investment. Unlike seasonal crops, those arecanut plants need time to grow and expenditure over a long period of time before they produce returns.
The destruction of mature or near-yielding plants can therefore cause losses that cannot be recovered immediately.
Krishnappa is now in distress after 63 plants have been destroyed. The farmer wants action taken against those responsible and has appealed to the authorities to find out who was behind it.
The incident has also raised fears among farmers in the area about the security of agricultural fields when night comes in.
Under YN Hosakote Police Limits
The incident took place in YN Hosakote of Pavagada taluk, and the matter falls under the jurisdiction of YN Hosakote Police Station.
The police will also need to get to know about the incident and why the miscreants entered the field at night. Information from the farmer and nearby residents could also help investigators establish the sequence of events.
If CCTV cameras are available in the surrounding areas, footage could perhaps assist in identifying individuals who may have entered or moved around the plantation during the relevant period.
Police may also look into similar incidents in the surrounding villages.
Farmer Appeals For Action
Krishnappa has appealed to the police to trace the people who destroyed his arecanut plants and take appropriate action against them.
The incident has caused farmers in YN Hosakote to be concerned, according to farmers themselves, as agricultural plantations can be vulnerable to damage when there is insufficient nighttime security.
