And in West Bengal, the conversation has sizzled as the state’s debate over who will do the talking has played out. The most popular figures in Kolkata’s political debate include Suvendu Adhikari, Agnimitra Paul and Shamik Bhattacharya.
Political analysts, meanwhile, claim the leader debate is already heating up at least internally within the party, and among its most loyal followers, as the BJP continues to chip away at opposition to the ruling All India Trinamool Congress, led by the party’s greatest figure, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Suvendu Adhikari is the most visible and influential BJP leader, even among those of their rivals, among those in northern and eastern regions. Adhikari is the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and has become the strongest opponent of Mamata Banerjee.
He broke away from the Trinamool Congress to join the saffron party. Adhikari emerged as an important national politician when he beat Mamata Banerjee in the fierce 2021 Nandigram election. He has been in the middle of the mire of the state for such a long time already: through brutal assaults on the state-run government apparatus, but also having been an active participant in the big-ticket race to see him emerge as CM.
Many BJP advocates see Adhikari as an appropriate person for leading the government because of his abundant long and short-lived administrative experience and the number of organisations, connections to political parties and a wide variety of voters that would fit into this office. But his own style of governance is one that some within the party leadership consider oppressive, and can put divisions between the factions at a distance. They got a lot of popularity where Agnimitra Paul and the Rise of Popularity were concerned.
Another name that hit the charts is Agnimitra Paul, one of the BJP’s most empowered female leaders in Bengal. Renowned for both her style of politics and extensive role in the media, she has become part of the young party community and urban voters. On the other hand, according to her analysis by political analysts, the attractiveness of Agnimitra Paul derives from her ability to cultivate relations with women as well as the new age. As an Indian Democrat who has some good communication skills, Paul can win over political analysts. Also, she appeals to women and young people who belong to the youth category.
They point to further developments with the BJP’s emergence as one of the leaders of parliamentary debating and campaigns, which has come to be viewed as a high-profile candidate among the parties emerging from this time period in the evolution of Bengal politics.
Another female chief ministerial candidate could also challenge Mamata Banerjee, supporters say, and could better represent a different style of leadership in a period of aggressive opposition digressions into opposition campaigning. While she may still be viewed by lesser, inexperienced, and less than 5-year cabinet members as a relative newcomer to the BJP, she has gained traction amongst the BJP’s top tier of elite through news stories of recent developments. Shamik Bhattacharya as Ideological Face:
A second one, and a second potential candidate, has to be senior BJP official Shamik Bhattacharya as an ideological face. As the ideological spine, famous through his ideological backbone, his historical ties with the BJP, Bhattacharya is a credible voice in the party, and one of the BJP’s historical patrons over time and among the party’s well-known, well-respected figures and friends that belong to the organisation.
And not to be confused with some of the other leaders' more confrontational political stances, Bhattacharya does what many leaders do: He is a calm and cerebral politician. Analysts say he is courting the ideological core of the BJP, as well as the party’s older party workers in Bengal.
His political credibility in the party is due to his administrative politics and skills on policy, although some have also argued that he does not yet have the mass base of the public at the same level of mass support that Suvendu Adhikari enjoys. BJP has not announced the CM face as of yet.
But there is no state-level BJP chief ministerial candidate for West Bengal. At the national level, senior party leaders have long proposed one of the electoral strategies plus leadership options that would arise to take “at the right time”. Political analysts argue the BJP should not hurry to assume the CM’s position so soon, as it compromises party-fighting unity and state government unity.
At the same time, debates over leaders have persisted, dominating tea stalls and social media conversations, political rallies, and television debates in Kolkata and other places in Bengal. In parallel, the ruling Trinamool Congress is still on course to identify Mamata Banerjee as perhaps its untouchable leader.
Though the BJP has also won a larger share of the vote in recent years, its undisturbed rule of Bengal remains an acute difficulty for the party. As we near one last massive political spectacle in West Bengal, the question of who will become the face of the BJP for chief minister has perhaps become one of the most closely linked of the issues in the state’s political spectrum.
