Cape Verde came into one of the toughest groups of the tournament together with football heavyweights Spain and Uruguay and experienced World Cup aspirants Saudi Arabia. They were expected to fail in the group stage. Instead they had one of the tournament's most unlikely underdog stories.

A hard-fought draw against Saudi Arabia on the final matchday was enough to seal qualification, Cape Verde ending up second in the group with three points and remaining unbeaten in the group stage. For a new country making its World Cup debut, it is an incredible achievement.

The Ultimate Underdog Story

Before the tournament started, very few experts in the world had Cape Verde in mind for progressing. They were in a group with former world champions Spain and two-time champions Uruguay while Saudi Arabia are currently world champions that have much more World Cup experience.

But Cape Verde refused to be intimidated.

Not chasing an extraordinary victory, they built their campaign on resilience, discipline, and belief. Throughout their three group-stage games, they proved that you can't compete with reputation in football’s biggest stage.

Their qualification is already one of the defining stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay Crash Out

Cape Verde’s historic qualification was confirmed after Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the other Group E match.

The result concluded a bad campaign for Uruguay and they finished with just two points from three games and failed to win a single match. One of South America’s traditional powerhouses can't qualify for the next round of the tournament while World Cup newcomers Cape Verde continue their dream journey and directly qualify for the next round from same group.

Senegal Keep Their Hopes Alive

Elsewhere, Senegal did one of the best performances of the tournament and routed Iraq 5-0.

The victory keeps Senegal's World Cup hopes alive, the African side finishing third in their group and still in the mix to be in the knockout rounds, depending on the qualification criteria.

Belgium Finish Top After Five-Star Display

Belgium made their mark on the tournament list with a 5-1 win against New Zealand.

The convincing win achieved Belgium’s top place in their group and they ended the group stage with five points and the best goal difference.

Egypt Also Through

Egypt also secured their place in the Round of 32 after a 0-0 draw against Iran.

The Pharaohs were level with Belgium on five points but finished second place because of a lower goal difference. Qualifying for the World Cup is yet another success for the African country.

A Night to Remember

The last round of group-stage games gave football fans everything they could ask for— historic performances, shocking exits, dominant performances, and emotional celebrations.

But the night belonged to Cape Verde most of the time.

They have already written one of the greatest underdog stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far, from World Cup debutants to knockout-stage qualifiers. To stay undefeated in a group with Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia is an achievement few imagined possible.

The dream continues, Cape Verde have shown the football world that on the biggest stage, belief can be just as powerful as history.
