When is MS Dhoni back in the big time, the biggest question facing the fans, the millions of Chennai Super Kings fans this IPL season?
Given that the current season in the IPL is already nearing its watershed moment for the Chennai Super Kings, this could only mean that 11 matches are behind them, and the league is yet to have a further set of three league-stage games.
If CSK wins all three games in particular, its final-game opportunity in a playoff season will ultimately rely largely on the performance of the rest of the teams involved. But for CSK fans, it’s very difficult to keep a playoff equation apart from the hype about Dhoni’s possible return.
The iconic wicketkeeper-batter hasn’t played a single one of the matches this season, citing injury fears. CSK had already sounded an early note that Dhoni was suffering from an injury and was not eligible for the opening period, ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Still, when the curtain appears to be on the league, fans are waiting for their icon to arrive on the field.
For Dhoni fans, at least, at this point, hope might exist. The franchise itself said it had secured around 60 seats on a flight for IndiGo to Lucknow in front of its clash with Lucknow Super Giants, stories said, among them that of the CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan.
Crucially, the passengers also have Dhoni’s name on the list as well. It helped get some kind of excitement back into CSK supporters since then, and they say they believe that the team now believe that there’s a chance of Dhoni finally appearing in the squad for the next game.
Whether he would play against Lucknow and whether he would play for the team in the final was unclear at this time, although he will probably be with the team. Questions about Dhoni's fitness have raised doubts as to whether he will play in the IPL. Some will even take the idea of IPL 2026 being the next phase to end the career of the former CSK captain.
Dhoni is still at odds with a different emotional prospect, though, if he doesn’t play against Lucknow. CSK, however, will play Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, which is strategically placed on the Chennai skyline. That will represent CSK’s final league-stage home game of the season.
The fixtures from that match mean the franchise won’t return to Chepauk for another game this IPL season until they qualify for more. Many fans say this is the occasion with which Dhoni may choose, perhaps, to host a future farewell show in front of the crowd at home.
Chepauk has been identified as the epitome of Dhoni’s and CSK’s success story, after all. The stadium has witnessed various great moments from the historic cricket captain, whether it be triumph and a final-over or heartbreaking scenes involving the “Yellow Army.” The coach retired from managing and decreased his role on the pitch in recent years, but his appeal is unquestionable.
You just have to work past a news release saying how fit he was, and what’s and isn’t available on that, and it becomes the chatter in cricket. To this point, CSK fans have been patiently awaiting an official response. Perhaps even Dhoni’s return (against Lucknow) or maybe another home game at Chepauk for the 2026 season is a game that has to be one of the most remarkable events of IPL 2026.
