Actress Rashmika Mandanna transcended its glamorous nature and transformed the wedding reception outfit into a cultural as well as an emotive celebration of her birthplace Kodagu, Karnataka. The embroidered red silk saree blouse decorated with the sword and shield, symbols of the Kodava community. With this design, she also wrote a Kodava text: “ಮನದುಂಬನ ನಲ್ಲಾಮೆನ ಬಯ್ಯಂದವ. ರಶ್ಮಿಕಾ ಮಂದಣ್ಣ” which means “With a full heart, I say hello to everyone” or “With heartfelt affection.”
The symbolic meaning was particularly impressive. These are basic Kodava symbols, which symbolise courage, worth and safety. The Kodava people have a long history of fighting through generations and the “Peeche Katthi” is a common dress for ceremonies and is a badge of honour. With this motif on her blouse, Rashmika took her tradition with her on one of the great days of her life.
Rashmika has taken this particular embroidery because she is a community person. The text of Kodava gave a further layer of significance as well, to show her love for and respect for people of their tribe. Her attire became tailored to this particular style, modern bridal style, but imbued with cultural symbols as well as true sentiment.
Her blouse was paired with a rich red Mysore silk saree. It was styled by Ami Patel and designed by Monica Shah of JADE by MK. Her Kodava jewelry was also used in complete harmony with the color in the outfit to add some authenticity and elegance. Her husband, Vijay Deverakonda, wore jewelry based on Karnataka’s royal Wadiyar dynasty, a seamless blend of tradition and modernity. Their outfits showed respect for tradition as well as celebration for one another.
Rashmika’s selection inspired both fans and fashion lovers. That she wears such a blouse not just as a look but also an education about bravery, honor and heartfelt love by the Kodavas.
Rashmika Mandanna's reception dress was less glamorous than it was more symbolic. A sumptuous traditional outfit and an arresting dance gown of its own, the garb spoke to the heart and soul of the people of the people she dressed. When wearing a blouse embroidered with the sword and shield motifs (and then she attached a Kodava message of love) to her blouse she honored her own roots and paid homage to her people. Her look was a testament to the power of wearing fashion as an expression of an identity, culture, and tradition.
