Heavy rains struck sections of Bengaluru on May 4, disrupting traffic, businesses and daily travel around the city.
Showers, including heavy rainstorms in Majestic, KR Market, Shantinagar, Yeshwanthpur, Malleshwaram, Rajajinagar, Mahalakshmi Layout and Nandini Layout were observed with cloudy skies and gusty winds. Residents and traders were taken off guard by the unexpected deluge, especially the commercial district KR Market, several of which had already opened in the morning.
Some parts of it became waterlogged, and cars slowed, complicating pedestrians' and shopkeepers' lives. India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Bengaluru is due to receive rainfall for the next three days as well. It is reported by the weather department that thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds in Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural districts will occur.
Officials from the Bengaluru Meteorological Centre cautioned that the urban region will probably have partly cloudy skies during the day, whereas light to moderate rainfall is expected ahead of the evening or nocturnal hours on May 4 and May 5.
Recent estimates have shown wind at around 30-40 kmph during rainfalls, raising the chance that branches will fall into cities, slowing the traffic, and reducing power on roads and other infrastructure. The IMD has also said that the maximum temperature of Bengaluru will be between 35 and 36 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature of the city could be 23 degrees Celsius in the next few days.

While warm during summertime, moisture-laden winds and atmospheric instability are causing pre-monsoon rainfall to be more common in South Interior Karnataka. Heavy rainfall is also seen in some parts of South Interior Karnataka apart from Bengaluru. According to the weather department's statement, May 5 warning alerts for possible showers and active thunderstorms have been issued for Ramanagara, Mysuru, and Mandya districts.
People need to be cautious, officials added, during heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. They also argue that people should limit unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay clear of weak structures and trees in strong winds, and ensure water is drained around homes and shopping centres to avoid water build-up. Meteorologists say southern India will see even greater rainfall in the coming days.
All the civic authorities should also take stock as sudden heavy showers are known to cause traffic jams and localised flooding in low-lying parts of Bengaluru. The recent rainfall has provided some relief from unbearable summer temperatures in the city in the short term, but the new wave of rain has raised worries about traffic snarls and urban flooding, which are common in Bengaluru during intense pre-monsoon showers.
