New controversy in Indian Railways has generated a lot of concern about passenger safety and the role of Train Ticket Examiners (TTEs), which is being widely reported online, and a passenger with confirmed Sleeper Class reservation who was harassed after an unauthorised traveller took the reserved berth.
The passenger was travelling on a confirmed Sleeper Class ticket when someone with only a General ticket was in the reserved seat without permission, the complaint said. When the passenger objected and asked the person to leave the berth, the argument erupted and the unidentified traveller was allegedly acting abusively.
Complaint filed through Rail Madad
The passenger filed a complaint with Rail Madad, an official grievance redressal platform of Indian Railways. The hope was that railway authorities would respond and return the passenger to the reserved seat.
But the reply from the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) added to the passenger's frustration, the complaint said.
The passenger alleged that the TTE arrived at the coach but instead of taking action against the unauthorised occupant, he scolded the complainant. The TTE said:
"There is so much work. Why do you expect checking in the Sleeper coach? My duty is in the AC coaches."
The passenger also claimed that the TTE contacted the railway control room and marked the complaint as “Resolved” even though the unauthorised traveller continued to occupy the seat and was abusive.

Questions Over Passenger Rights
We are disappointed and frustrated with the fact that passengers who have reservations in Sleeper Class are not protected.
Many railway passengers have questioned whether those who pay for the reserved Sleeper Class tickets are truly getting the security and assistance they are entitled to. Reserved coaches are only for the passengers who are entitled to reservations and unauthorised use of reserved berths can create inconvenience and discomfort and even safety concerns in some cases.
The allegations also raised questions from the perspective of how complaints filed on Rail Madad are treated and if grievances are always resolved effectively on the ground before being officially closed.
Growing Public Discussion
The incident has received attention on social media, with users weighing in with different opinions. Some called for stricter enforcement of the law against unauthorised passengers entering reserved coaches, others for better accountability by railway staff who handle such complaints.
