It was a suspected Ebola scare that led to concern in Bengaluru after a woman from Uganda reportedly developed symptoms associated with the deadly viral disease.
The woman, who had recently arrived in India from Uganda, was brought to the hospital in Bengaluru after exhibiting symptoms of fever and ill health, which prompted health authorities to immediately isolate and watch her. The patient’s symptoms prompted concern, officials said, given Uganda’s earlier exposure to Ebola outbreaks.
To guard against this risk, doctors took samples and sent them for sophisticated laboratory testing to see if the infection was caused by the Ebola virus or another viral disease. There is no currently confirmed Ebola case in India, and the woman is being treated under strict medical supervision, authorities clarified.
The Karnataka Health Department launched emergency surveillance in the aftermath of the incident. Medical teams are believed to have started contact tracing to trace passengers, hospital staff and others who might have come into contact with the woman once she landed in Bengaluru, the report said.
Airport health screening systems have similarly been put on edge to monitor international travellers arriving from high-risk areas. Health officials warned the public not to panic, adding that isolation and testing are standard preventive measures in suspected communicable disease cases.
The early detection and rapid containment are crucial to stopping highly communicable diseases, experts said. Ebola virus disease is a severe infectious disease that is transmitted by direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people. Typical symptoms can include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, and bleeding complications in rarer forms.
The disease has mostly hit African countries, though there have been isolated international alerts as a result of worldwide travel. Hospitals in Bengaluru said they are fully equipped with isolation wards and protective infrastructure to handle any potential outbreak circumstances.
The Union Health Ministry is closely monitoring developments as well. When laboratory test results become available, further clarity will follow. Health authorities, meanwhile, are remaining vigilant across Bengaluru and other major transit points in the country.
