A 22‑year‑old female named Nikita was tragically killed in a road accident in Ambala, Haryana, on Wednesday evening. It has shocked some local residents, and has raised a lot of questions in relation to drunk driving and police accountability.
The accident was near Kali Paltan Bridge, when a policeman – apparently drunk – struck an e‑rickshaw loaded with passengers while speeding. Nikita, who was coming home from Delhi after a work trip in Gurugram, had already boarded the e‑rickshaw when she arrived at Ambala.
Witnesses said the impact threw Nikita onto the road. The vehicle appears to have run over her and did not stop. She was rushed to Ambala Civil Hospital, where medical staff declared her dead.
The horrifying moments were described by the e‑rickshaw driver, Ravinder Singh. He stated, “A speeding car of a police officer struck our e‑rickshaw, one of its passengers, a woman, fell. After that, the police officer ran over the girl. By the time the girl was taken to the hospital, she was deemed dead.”
Singh said the officer looked drunk at the time of the accident. Nikita’s brother Mayank also accused the officer of being drunk and cited locals who saw the crash. “We lost our daughter because of the police officer,” her uncle told the media. “We want justice and clear‑cut action against the perpetrator.”
The accused was assigned Police Sub‑Inspector Amit, stationed at the Baldev Nagar outpost, confirmed Station House Officer Dharamveer. “The drunk policeman, he said, had lost control of the car and ran over Nikita. The driver has been arrested by the police and a case has been filed.”
Later, a senior member of the police confirmed that a medical report showed alcohol consumption. The accused is in custody, and more is being done to find out.
The incident angered locals and assembled at Ambala Civil Hospital with Nikita’s family. Protests broke out, calling for strict legal action and warning against covering up the case because the accused is a police officer.
Nikita’s untimely killing has devastated her family and enraged the community that wants someone to hold them accountable. The case underlines the dangers of drinking and driving, particularly in situations where law enforcers are involved, so we need to tighten up our law enforcement. Justice for Nikita has become both an example and rallying cry for Ambala that symbolizes the battle against the exploitation of authorities.
